Philippines, a tropical country in Southeast Asia, consists of an archipelago of over 7,000 islands that are separated from the Asian mainland by the South China Sea. In the waters of the Philippines there are more than 2000 different kinds of fish. In 1995 the Philippines contributed 2.2 million tons, or 2 percent of total world catch, ranking it twelfth among the top 80 fish-producing countries.
